I asked for volunteers to send me their 2023 ballots for Novel and Series. Several posts ago I posted numbers based on the first 11 volunteers. In the end I had 20 volunteers.
This table shows what happened with the points from the 20 ballots I analysed and the published numbers between rounds 3 and 2 when The Mountain in the Sea was eliminated.
Volunteers | “Actual” | |||||
Work | PntsR3 (Sum) | PntsR2 (Sum) | Difference | R3 | R2 | Difference |
Babel, R.F. Kuang | 4.75 | 5.83 | 1.08 | 164.93 | 164.93 | 0.00 |
Legends and Lattes, Travis Baldree | 1.83 | 1.83 | 0.00 | 210.45 | 211.45 | 1.00 |
Nettle & Bone, T. Kingfisher | 2.75 | 3.33 | 0.58 | 207.50 | 207.67 | 0.17 |
Nona the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir | 2.17 | 3.17 | 1.00 | 196.78 | 197.28 | 0.50 |
The Kaiju Preservation Society, John Scalzi | 0.67 | 0.67 | 0.00 | 178.68 | 178.85 | 0.17 |
The Spare Man, Mary Robinette Kowal | 2.08 | 2.17 | 0.08 | 194.32 | 195.65 | 1.33 |
Babel, Nettle & Bone, and Nona the Ninth all receive MORE points from the 20 volunteers than the works do in the published stats.
You know, I’m beginning to suspect that maybe, just maybe, there is something just not quite right about that report. Somebody should ask whoever managed the Hugos in 2023. Forget who that was now.

This is why “whoever that was” needs to be kept far away from any future Hugos. As infuriating as the wrongful removals were, they were not entirely unexpected under these circumstances. But there is no reason not to count the ballots correctly and provide an accurate report of having done so.
