Age of Hugo

Age of winners by year
Age of winners by year

I’ve compiled a set of stats on the ages of the nominees and winners of the Hugo for best novel. (All but one of the 2015 nominees also)

The data was too try and judge the most ‘clique’ like period. Not sure I can actually tell anything.

Some graphs without commentary at this point.

On the systematic evaluation of creative works of science fiction: part the fourth

So I have the criteria I made here. All I need now is something to assess. It needed to be something short enough to re-read but not so short as to be hard to evaluate.

I picked the puppy nominees for best Novelette, as I already had them in a spreadsheet and I’d found this a difficult set of works to judge when I had ranked them here. Additionally there was only one John C Wright work in this bunch.

On reflection I should have done the one non-puppy as well. Maybe later.

Anyway here are the scores. Comments behind the scores will come in another post.

Novellette “The Journeyman: In the Stone House”  “Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust, Earth to Alluvium”  “The Triple Sun: A Golden Age Tale” “Championship B’tok”  “Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus”
Author/Publisher Michael F. Flynn Gray Rinehart Rajnar Vajra Edward M. Lerner John C. Wright
Total 9 12 8 7 6

Plot 2 2 1 2 2
Characters 1 2 1 1 1

And what does that all prove? Well nothing much…

Phone blogging

A big thanks to Mike Glyer’s File770, which linked to my On Petunias  and Whales posts.

Nothing quite so nerdy in this post – just trying out posting from my phone.
