Where is Sad Puppies 5?

Cast your minds back to January 2017, Mad Genius Club writer Amanda S Green announced on the Sad Puppies 4 website that:

“In the near future, this site will be shut down and a new site for Sad Puppies 5 will go live. In the meantime, if you have any books, movies, etc., you think award-worthy, please list them in the comment section. The Sad Puppies had already made it clear that they regarded their point proven about the Hugo Awards (whatever that point may have been) but that Sad Puppies would live on as a place to aggregate reccomendations.

In a longer post at Mad Genius at the same time, Amanda S Green had written in response to Declan Finn posting his “Sad Puppies 5” recommendations:

“So, let’s be very clear. The New Year is here and with it comes the time when we need to start thinking about the books we read and whether we feel they are worthy of being nominated for any of the various awards being offered this year. Well the Hugo nomination period came and went and to the Sad Pups credit, they didn’t get involved. Surprisingly though, it now looks like the Dragon Award may slip by without an official Puppy involvement. The SP4 site is unchanged.

Deadline for the Dragon Awards is July 24 and as of today there is no movement at the station for Sad Pups the Fifth. I’ve some mixed feelings about that. Obviously, it is nice that the petering out may have finally petered out for a campaign that caused a lot of angst, anger and division and achieved nothing positive except among its opponents. On the other hand, there was a moment when the whole debarkle could have morphed into a venue where like minded people could recommend books whose nuggets were sufficiently nutty. Time is running out for the Sads to get something together that people will be sufficiently motivated to make contributions/suggestions.

      • Yes, it can’t be like one of those series that gets cancelled without finishing their arc, can it?

        I suggest they look for end-of-series inspiration from The Prisoner. Or maybe nuBSG.

        (Or to totally mix my metaphors, perhaps the end is that Declan Finn is hired to be the Brandon Sanderson to their Robert Jordan)

      • Maybe Chuck Tingle can buy the net domain for SP5 and just have a running video loop of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’ “, a la The Sopranos ending. Don’t ever stop believing that love is real!

  4. Maybe they will initiate two 5s to make up for lost time and then claim that was the multi-dimensional plan all along? They do have a record of stumbling on fives. Alternately, it could be that their Empire is, in fact, Collapsing. 🙂

  5. Lots of the usual suspects on Vox Day’s list, but also some oddities, e.g. Richard Fox is not in any way affiliated with the puppies as far as I know and I’ve never even heard of the horror novel.

    • Beale usually includes something bizarrely… normal thing that attracted his fancy in all his little “game the awards” thing.

      It adds to the feel that sci-fi fanship is being punked by an oversized 12-year old.

    • Alison Littlewood is a British author, and I’m not sure she’s caught on outside her home country – I notice that her books have been getting rather more reviews at Amazon.co.uk than at Amazon.com. My local library has some of her books, although it leans more towards her crime writing than her horror.

      Honestly, I think it’s a breath of fresh air to see Puppydom recommending something for the horror category beyond vampire comedies and space opera ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      • I believe Hoyt was slated to run both SP 3 and 4 before dropping out due to ill-health. I’m sorry to hear her troubles continue, but the only reason why her ill-health should prevent it running is a total lack of enthusiasm from the rest. At this point it’s clear that SP is ending not with a bang but a whimper, its movement hollowed out and stolen by the RP and the commercial-minded hangers-on like Finn and Niemeier. The split into the elements of a) manufactured bile and b) cynical self-promotion pretty much reveals what it was always made of.

        • Yes, it’s very telling, isn’t it, that none of the other Puppies was willing to step up and take on SP5 in light of Hoyt’s illness. At this point, I think that they’re realizing the immense amount of damage they’ve done to their careers by behaving so badly, and are just wishing it would all go away and be forgotten.

        Seriously, though, it would be pretty easy to “let go” of the Sad Puppies, but they are still getting dragged along in the wake of the Rabids. In fact, if the Rabids hadn’t come along, IMHO everyone could have had much more cordial relations in the end. But you know what they say — if you lie down with rabid dogs, you wake up with much worse things than fleas!

      • IKR? Why didn’t any of the other Sad Pups/MGC step in to run it since she couldn’t? Or toss it to the ever-eagar Declan, who’d love to do it? Or any of their supposed Teeming Masses of Nutty Nugget Real Fans? Nope, they dump it on a woman, and when she gets sick, nobody takes up the burden.

        Obviously they no longer care enough to do it, or even to announce that it isn’t happening due to whatever.

        I think they just hope we’ll all forget it ever happened. Not a chance. We’re not going to forget a movement that started out as a petty spite campaign by one special snowflake that led to a racist, sexist, homophobic bigot enriching himself.

        It will always be laid at their door.

    • Oh, he’s doing the old “I submitted a nomination for my book, therefore it’s a Dragon/Nebula Award nominee” idiocy.
      His desperation is really pathetic. 🙄

      • He’s one of the guys with a book in the Puppy book giveaway during the Puppies’ post-Odysseycon abuse of Valentinelli. He came over to File770 and posted a link to a blog post of his own which further abused Valentinelli. And he’s the one who is now (a la De lArroz, in an attempt to get publicity at File770) claiming that he has Filers “lurking” at his blog. Like De lArroz, another Dec lanFinn self-promoter trying to cuddle up to the Puppies in the hope it will kick-start a career for him. 🙄

  8. 4 was The Embigginning of the End. While the regular bs around it was annoying the recommendations were interesting to read last year at least.

  9. Tell Timothy that I very much enjoyed “Bortsworth Quest,” and I’m a text-adventure player from way back (I used to beta test for Infocom). I will create an entry for it in the Interactive Fiction DB, if he doesn’t mind.

In response to the (now-deleted) question as to why fans can’t just let the whole Puppy thing go, I direct the reader to the presence on the final ballot of the novelette, “Alien Stripper Boned From Behind By The T-Rex,” by Stix Hiscock. Once 3SV (or something like it) passes, fans will be able to remove this sort of thing before it becomes a public embarrassment, and at that point, it’ll be possible to put the Puppy thing behind us, although I expect hard feelings will linger for years.
