Fake Vox News

Fascism loves nothing more than to exploit death to spread both fear and misinformation. The recent shooting at Fort Lauderdale has proven to be just such an occasion. The Daily Beast reports: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2017/01/06/inside-the-alt-right-s-florida-airport-shooter-esteban-santiago-hoax.html?via=desktop&source=twitter

Far rightwing figureheads immediately invented an elaborate and racist conspiracy theory that CNN had lightened a photo of alleged Fort Lauderdale airport shooter Esteban Santiago shortly after the Friday attack.
In reality, CNN had yet to air a picture of Santiago, let alone lightened a picture of him. The conspiracy also used a picture of an entirely different man named Esteban Santiago—not the alleged shooter.

Sure enough, over at Science Fictions own gloomy core of Alt-Right confusion, Vox Day is pushing the same line: http://web.archive.org/web/20170107052215/http://voxday.blogspot.com.au/2017/01/5-dead-in-ft-lauderdale-shooting.html [web archive link – live link here http://voxday.blogspot.com.au/2017/01/5-dead-in-ft-lauderdale-shooting.html%5D

Fake news, lies, propaganda? Not sure what the best word for it is. Malicious bullshit is probably the best description – I doubt Vox knew or cared whether the image was true.

I added the word ‘fake’ for obvious reasons!

It’s really sad that the moment a mass shooting occurs the argument is the race, religion and country of origin of the murderer, as opposed to whether ease of access to guns was a contributing factor.
(Not to mention questioning whatever the hell it is that persuades people that violence is a solution to things)

“Fascism loves nothing more than to exploit death to spread both fear and misinformation.”

Agreed. Is it not fascinating then the speed with which MSM networks got gun control advocates on the air? Minutes, in some cases.

Also, those with short memories should try to remember the behavior of the MSM in the recent Orlando nightclub atrocity. The identity and motive of the shooter was actively obfuscated and outright concealed for several days.

Today, everybody is implying or outright saying this is a case of mental illness. We shall see.

One of the defining characteristics of fascism is that it creates its own reality and that all subsequent truth claims are measured against that vision, that is to say that “truth” is relative to the degree to which it supports the regime’s ideology not according to measurable factual reality (see: Nazi science or Soviet production statistics). It’s a different sort of hegemon from, say, the generally hegemonic world view of the western christian capitalist individualist reality in which we have been raised.

I find the rapid rise, diffusion, and acceptance of these sites extremely worrying. CNN is terrible toady journalism anyway, and I would be the last to defend it in terms of quality or integrity, but I don’t think they set out to be intentionally misleading or actively damaging. I also tend not to see these sites as “fake news” — they are alt-news, like the alt-right its alt-reality.
