A Journey Round the Puppy Seas to Check on the Election

platonictrumpI haven’t written as much on the US Presidential election as I thought I would primarily because the appropriate response is simply typing WHATTHEACTUALFECK?? over and over and over again. Even Donald Trump’s emails stopped being funny.

Still, I thought given the levels of meltdown that it was worth seeing what is happening in other people’s ideological bubbles and the sites that pop-up on autocomplete in the address bar are the puppy-related ones.

On the majority of the Sad Puppy side, there is nothing much to see. Quite rightly, the majority of the leading lights of the Sad Puppies took a principled stand against Donald Trump sometime ago. Choosing not to saddle themselves with a far right misogynistic albatross was a wise choice – possibly a lesson learned from 2015.

Peter ‘Tor Boycott’ Grant is the most noticeable exception with a reluctant half-hearted endorsement of Trump:

http://bayourenaissanceman.blogspot.com.au/2016/10/trumps-sexist-clintons-corrupt-so-what.html

Moving more Rabidwards, John C Wright has said little recently about the election. The last notable post was in response to the first Presidential debate: http://www.scifiwright.com/2016/09/first-presidential-debate/

Rather like Grant, he appears to be holding his nose and wrinkling his face against the stench from the candidate he feels obliged to support.

Meanwhile, in Voxland the assembled troops are still eagerly awaiting the coming “Trumpslide”. While disheartened by the first debate and disappointed with Trump making something that looked vaguely like an apology, Trump’s behaviour in the second debate was precisely what their worldview prescribes as winning behaviour. That everybody else is watching in jaw-dropped horror is not sinking in.

[ETA] Vox has also now officially announced that his Voxopedia is a thing and totally not just a giant exercise to allow him to edit John Scalzi’s wiki-bio without interference.

Also for those still counting I note this number: “Thanks to the 172 Original Galaxians who made this possible. ”

    • I want to share my locker room story. Not so long ago, when I was new to this job, I was in a meeting strategizing with the manager of our unit about some much-needed resource or other and after a long discussion he said that I shouldn’t worry about it or spend too much time writing up a case for these things, that he’d be taking care of it because “all the real decisions at this place are made in the men’s locker room” after lunchtime workouts. I’ve never forgotten those fourteen words; they were spoken by a well-meaning person who self-identified as a feminist and progressive but who had just told me (without realizing it) that he had access to power and influence in a way that I never would.

Or, realize that decisions are -always- made off the books, and work with it like EVERYBODY ELSE. No one in middle management ever puts their name to a decision, its the kiss of death. That’s why they sort stuff out in the locker room, at parties, on the golf course.

IT works the other direction too. In hospitals these days, the grapevine and the locker room are -female-, males don’t get included. Everybody knows it.

Reports and paperwork are a legal fiction. Meetings are an excuse to skive off and drink coffee. If you haven’t figured that out yet, you’re a kid.

Personally I find that sort on environment intolerable, I won’t work there. Not worth the burnt liver cells. I’d sooner stand on a ladder scraping paint all day, and have done.

  2. I’m a bit surprised VD has nailed his colours so firmly to the mast on both Trump and the Voxipedia. I was expecting him to be more clearly setting up the fallback that if Trump loses it just exposes the “cucks” etc etc, and while he’s obviously still going to do that, he’s gone much further in on Trump as a credible candidate than I thought he would.
Similarly on the Voxipedia – he’s down as chief designer when I assumed he’d leave some minions to run it and just take credit if it works, so he’s clearly convinced it’ll be huge.
Although, perhaps there is a method to his madness – maybe the alternate timeline of the voxipedia will have a President Trump (and airships!)

  3. That whole scene reminds me of nothing as much as an adolescent after-school tree house club, complete with secret passwords, decoder rings and playtime hierarchies (galaxians, starlords, corelords, evil lords of evil, Supreme Dark Lord etc). One gets the impression that if any of the cool kids invited them to go to a GRRM after-party in a bitchen’ camaro, they’d ditch their treehouse friends in a heartbeat. Every sitcom or YA series has a version of this sweetly sad tale.

Extra pretension points for the sacred numerology of “seven canons” though. I wonder if they’ve been working on this project for forty days and forty nights?

    Yes. This.

But then again, pretty much every election/ vote this year has had that effect for me. Brexit? The return of Hanson? Duterte?

That this is still the least worst is suddenly a terrifying thought.

    • Well at least the US looks like it will make the right choice. Look at the xenophobic hell the UK is plunging into already – employers having to list how many foreigners they employ, schools collecting data on foreign born kids. Agh – Donna Noble clearly made the wrong turning at some point in this timeline.

      Liked by 1 person

      • The Tories have now shuffled away from the “foreigner list” thing looking faintly embarrassed.
The schools data thing is more interesting – it was essentially an extension of current data gathering which has legitimate purposes, both for calculating funding and judging performance, i.e. a school with a higher proportion of pupils recorded as English as a 2nd Language would probably get more money for extra work in that area (a measure they were already collecting; similarly data on special educational needs for similar reasons, etc etc). I suspect the expanded data was just wanted for more demographic work, not any intent to use it on an individual basis – but the timing was appalling and it seems that at least some schools implemented it in a deeply cackhanded way, along the lines of “they’ve got a funny-sounding surname, send ’em a letter asking where they’re from” which just made everyone deeply suspicious.

        Like

      • I agree that the school data gathering was probably intended for legitimate purposes, since statistics about students from as we call it “a migrant background” are routinely collected in many countries and the public school system in the UK has been rather statistics driven for at least twenty years now. However, the timing and the ham-fisted way in which it was implemented were totally wrong.

That was from -today-. Elsewhere on Drudge, the head of the NY Election Commission says whole cemeteries are voting. Voting -DemocRat-, of course.

I do not have to like Trump (and I don’t) to notice all of that. Did all of your “question authority” bullsh*t meters fail, all at the same time?

Sad Puppies authors seem generally to be people who notice things like “CNBC John Harwood Advises [Democrat] Campaign” and then ask “So why is he a debate moderator?” then conclude “Oh, it’s crooked. I see.”

In other Trump news, the number of people saying they support Hillary but planning to vote Trump in the privacy of the secret ballot voting booth is most likely very large. I base this on anecdote and conversations with Canadians, but it seems pretty reasonable. Most people are going along to get along, they mumble the required pieties and look for a place to stick their shiv in.

The real question in my mind this year is: can the USA still pull off a fair and legal secret ballot vote? Or have the forces of corruption nibbled that pillar of the republic down to a toothpick? I guess we’ll see.

You’ve seen the video from 2008 of Barry showing off his woody for the girls on the plane? It’s a beauty. If Obama was a Republican, they’d have played that tape every ten minutes for months. With circles and arrows. That’s what I’m talking about JJ.

Did all those women -want- to see his woody? One of them got up and went to the back of the plane to get away from him. Think upon that, a -reporter- gave up a spot at the front of the plane, next to the President. He must have been creeping her the hell out, right?

Where’s the Shirtstorm, JJ? Where’s the Twitter avalanche? Where’s Brianna Wu? Back-of-the-plane-lady doesn’t get defended? Her story is not important? No news coverage? ITS A PLANE FULL OF REPORTERS. WITH VIDEO.

And anyway, aren’t you Canadian? What do you care which American politician showed his woody to whom? As someone who is not American either, I generally keep out of other countries’ elections and politics, unless the results impact me. I do care about the outcome of the US presidential election, because the results will impact us all. However, I do not care about the embarrassing sexual antics of US politicians.

So where’s the Shirtstorm, Aaron? An allegation has been made! Women were made to feel uncomfortable! Brianna Wu!!11!

Remember Aaron, its not the nature of the evidence that’s important, its the seriousness of the charge.

Incidentally, if you Google “Bill Clinton rape” right now you get zero suggestions in the little suggestion box. Also no suggestions for “Bill Clinton rapist”, “Clinton rape”, “Clinton rapist”. That’s as far as I went. Interestingly though, if you type “bim” you get “bimbo eruptions” and there’s a wikipedia entry right at the top of the page. For Betsy Wright. Not Bill Clinton.

Conversely, Google “Trump locker” and you get suggestions that take you right to the Daily Kos, the open mic video, the whole schmear.

      • Nope, didn’t care for Assange back when he was spilling the beans (which everyone already knew) on BushCo. Thought he was a creepy predator then, too, and the outing of people who worked for the US probably led to a lot of deaths. Now he’s either desperate for attention, or carrying water for Putin; maybe he’s hoping Vlad will give him asylum, like he did for Snowden?

No allegations have ever been proven against Bill Clinton, in 30 years of investigation. All the women he’s slept with were consenting adults — I met one who happily admitted she chased him. And he’s not running for office anyway.

Might as well bring up that a) Melania Trump was certainly a high-priced hooker when she first illegally came to NYC and
        b) there are lawsuits pending against Trump for rape, including one of a 13 year old girl. Which mysteriously keeps getting postponed till after the election. His first wife retracted her rape story for a lot of money, but everyone knows, after he went to a plastic surgeon she recommended for a “scalp reduction” (i.e. baldness-hiding). It went badly (duh), so he beat and raped her, then divorced her for younger wife #2 who he was already shagging.

Oh, and Bill’s never said anything pervy about his daughter, as long as we’re talking sex. Trump has, repeatedly. It’s not normal to talk about your children the way he does.

Hillary’s never been divorced, never cheated on a spouse, and never bragged about the latter. Trumpy’s on his third wife, cheated on the first two, and probably this one. He thinks everyone’s a serial adulterer and sexual assaulter, and talks like he does. Do you do/say those things? Do you befriend men who have that attitude? Hillary speaks often of how her faith informs her decisions; Trumpo the Clown doesn’t know squat about the Bible. In a normal time, Hillary would be the perfect Republican candidate.

Plus the investigation into the failure of “Trump University” that mysteriously went away when Donnie gave the investigator a yoooge campaign contribution. Or the whole thing that his charity has been declared fake and ordered to stop taking donations.

I’m sure you don’t know about many of these things since Drudge and Breitbart don’t report them, so I hope this helps. Try reading some of your own country’s fine news sources for a change — and not just from Alberta.

Rockefeller, Nixon, and Reagan must be rolling over in their graves at Trumpy’s worship of Putin. 30 years after “Tear down this wall!” and Donnie’s sucking up to a KGB bigwig! (That was a damn fine speech of Ronnie’s.)

None of the Bushes are voting for him — heck, Poppy George, former CIA head and war hero, says he’s voting for Hillary. None of the Republicans I know (friends of the Bush family among them) are voting for Trump. They might not vote Hillary, they might vote Johnson, they might not tick any box at the top of the ticket and only vote R downticket. They’re decent people who are horrified at what their national party has become.

We know why there’s Sad Puppies. Low-information straight white men have such a yooge unearned sense of entitlement, and their leaders have whipped them up into such a frenzy of fear of The Other that they’re striking out like cornered animals. Because non-white, non-straight, non-men might get to compete on a semi-level playing field for the first time in history, and the scared white boys are afraid they won’t automatically win any more just because of an accident of birth. They’ll have to actually compete on merit, and that terrifies them. Instead of upping their game, they’d rather just throw out everyone who doesn’t look like them.

“Make America Great Again”? When did it stop being great, Donnie? It’s done well by you. It looks pretty good to me, though a few improvements would help. But then I’m not lead around by my amygdala or my penis, so…

I know as a Puppy you’re legally require to hate the dread Scalzi (I don’t know why, except for Teddy’s hate-crush), but he’s got a nice summary today which deals with all the email/Benghazi/horndog Bill stuff too.

All true. On the other hand, Trump has never, that we know of, left American soldiers and an American ambassador to die. For optics. He’s never blamed an obscure film maker for their deaths. He’s never had said film maker arrested and held in jail for a lengthy period, all the while pretending the guy caused a major “terrorist attack” with his really crappy anti-Mooselimb film that no one ever heard of.

Trump, self-acknowledged serial woman molester, has never, that we know of, exposed the state secrets of the USA to hostile foreign governments. For several years. And then destroyed evidence and corrupted the FBI to escape jail, which is where literally any other US citizen would be today if they did that.

Trump, pouting duckfaced idiot that he is, does not have cemeteries full of the undead voting for him.

Trump, blowhard and buffoon, is not on heavy duty anti-seizure meds and doesn’t have a full time neurologist in the car with him everywhere he goes. He does not have to be carried up stairs. He hasn’t missed a major event because of collapsing on a sidewalk and having to be poured into a waiting limo.

But mostly he does not have a very strident media trying to cover up everything he’s ever done wrong. If that guy picked his nose on a street corner, we would have video within the hour on all the major networks. Every single thing Trump ever did, we know about it.

Oh, and as far as I’m aware, people are not getting beat up at Trump rallies for having “Melania Trump Is A Hooker!!!” signs. The signs are there, they just aren’t getting assaulted and beat down for having them.

        Just sayin’.

Bill Clinton is somewhat difficult to ignore. At one time he had the highest approval ratings of any living president. That’s after he went through a bullshit impeachment. As far as his piccadilloes, we had Ken Starr investigate them. What is it we are supposed to be concerned about exactly.

In one case, he seemed to have affection for a co-worker, but stopped short of intercourse despite pleadings to the contrary.

In another we are supposed to believe that Clinton was invited to a hotel room; raped the woman; went home and told Hillary; had a campaign event a short time later and the victim attended; Hillary met her and smiling said she appreciated what the victim did for Bill and then phrased it in a threatening manner to convey keep your mouth shut. All this in-spite of a under oath affidavit that none of it ever happened. That’s just bullshit.

And then we have Paula Jones who claimed that Bill’s equipment was distinctly marked when Monica said no it isn’t. Along with 3 Doctors. Bunk. U.S. District Judge Susan Webber Wright dismissed each and every claim and Jones went on to her boxing career with Tonya Harding. Clinton gave her 850K to STFU and there was no appeal to the 8th circuit.

Then we have Kathleen Whilley who told her friend (Julie Hiatt Steele) to lie for her. She did. Eventually Ken Starr prosecuted Steele for lying to a grand jury but could not Whilley because she got immunity. In her deposition for Paula Jones, she could not remember if Clinton followed her and successfully kissed her. In front of the grand jury she remembered also sorts of following, kissing and fondling. Linda Tripp said Whilley had a thing for Clinton.

Now this has what to do with the woman that may be the most qualified Presidential candidate in my lifetime?

Whole cemeteries are rising from the grave to vote Democrat. The undead vote may be bigger than the illegal alien vote this year. That’s not a conspiracy theory, that’s a headline. It’s a new headline almost every day as more and more zombie voters turn up.

Here’s another: “Bill Clinton rape protester beaten at Hillary Vegas rally” There’s video of some guy with a “Bill’s a rapist!” sign getting his ass kicked. Probably by a bunch of SJW feminists.

Here’s another: Scott Adams the Dilbert cartoon guy got shadow banned on Twitter for asking people to post evidence of violence against Trump supporters. There were many posts, apparently Twitter didn’t like Dems looking bad.

Go and google “Clinton rape” or “Hillary rape” or any combination. See what the suggestion box does.

None of this is a “theory.” These people are actually doing this stuff. We can all see it. Some of us are saying wtf? Some of us are sticking our fingers in our ears and saying “LALALALALA!!!!!”

      • I just typed in Bill Clinton rape and it returned 22,400,000 results. That’s not .particularly effective scrubbing. It’s also not really news that Google’s algorithms show different people different results based on their zip code, previous browsing history, perceived interests, its profit-driven desire to maintain market access (China) and many other reasons. Just because you haven’t taken notice of the complaints and debates before doesn’t mean they weren’t taking place.

        • KR, the googlespiracy appears to relate to the autocomplete in the search box, not results. Google appears to decline to autocomplete _any_ search with an identifiable persons name followed by “rape” (not that I checked many, so there are probably exceptions). I suspect this is to do with them being a corporation with a) lawyers and b) an aversion to lawsuits, not a grand media conspiracy, but what would I know?

      • Yes indeed. I was not addressing the grand conspiracy directly, you’re right. Just attempting to point out that the results themselves are available, which tends to undercut the claim of information suppression on that particular topic (I know google distorts results in China, for example, like “jasmine” for the jasmine revolution” and tianenmen square). For what it’s worth, I just typed in Ghomeshi rap and Roesthlisberger rap and neither of them autocompleted with rape either.

Conspiracy theory ranting. You’ve got no credible evidence to back this nutty theory up.

Scott Adams the Dilbert cartoon guy got shadow banned on Twitter for asking people to post evidence of violence against Trump supporters.

Once again, a baseless claim with no credible evidence supporting it. Just making shit up and claiming it to be true doesn’t actually make it true, and that’s all you and your alt-right buddies have been doing for months now.

Bill Clinton rape protester beaten at Hillary Vegas rally

People should go see the video, since it shows you are completely full of shit. What the video actually shows are protestors being escorted from the event by security. No one is being beaten. No one is getting their “ass-kicked” unless by “ass-kicked” you mean one guy who was pushed. Once again, you seem to have not actually done anything other than read the wild-eyed conspiranoid headlines and didn’t bother to look at the actual substance. You continue to make yourself look like a fool.

None of this is a “theory.” These people are actually doing this stuff.

No, they aren’t. Making shit up doesn’t make it real. You need to learn to distinguish between fantasy and reality, because you’re spouting nothing more than fantasies at this point. Do you want to know why you aren’t convincing anyone? Because you’re trying to sell bullshit, and everyone outside your little bubble of alt-right buddies can tell that it is bullshit. The only people convinced by what you are touting are gullible losers and idiots. Everyone else is laughing at your gullibility.

Yeah, I’ve been watching the descent into Tron-Guy-level conspiracy theories and incoherency with some fascination. It’s like watching the progressive effects of CJD, to the point now where there’s not even a hint of rationality left.

  9. Google’s suggestion box doesn’t offer anything up for “Trump rape”, either. And that’s something which is going to court in December.

    • You don’t find that odd, Peter? You get “Trump rap” suggestion, but not “Trump rape”? Come on.

You understand I’m not trying to pretend Trump is this great guy, right? I’m pointing out anomalies that indicate manipulation. Each thing is small (or with Hillary, large), but taken together its a big pile.

Which everyone seems to be in a yuuuge rush to ignore. That’s all I’m saying here. Where’s the outrage? Missing. The dog is not barking.

Why is the dog not barking, Peter? Somebody threw it a steak, maybe?

      • Hi,
Look you clearly want to discuss something but what you are posting is largely just incoherent jumps from one topic to another and demands that everybody else makes sense of it.

        For example I could type:
Bowie Dies! Eco Dies! Prince Dies! Yet Dylan WINS the nobel prize? Where is Hillary in all this? And what about the Hurricanes? Bees become endangered and what is Amazon DOING ABOUT it?

That’s what it’s like. Calm down. Take some deep breaths. Gather your thoughts. Don’t just wave your hands at unconnected dots and shout that somebody (not you apparently) should connect them. Maybe try actually connecting one dot to the next with actual facts that do actually connect logically one dot to the next.

Except that the specific instance which I addressed isn’t an anomaly at all, as is easily shown by repeating the exercise with Trump” substituted for “Clinton”.

Lets begin with voter fraud, Camestros. It is occurring in several states at this time, all of it connected with one party. That’s the undead vote, in case you don’t understand the allusion. Voting fraud. Very illegal. Very associated with the Democrats. See? very easy to understand.

Also, according to several of your other commenters, a conspiracy theory.

What I’m doing is demonstrating I can type “Bowie Dies! Eco Dies! Prince Dies! Yet Dylan WINS the nobel prize?” and y’all will scream “RACIST! CONSPIRACY! HOAX! BIGOT! Raaaawk!” like a flock of parrots.

Trump’s not running against Hillary. He’s running against you guys.

Well, no. If you had read the article produced by CBS and not a conspiracy theory laden alt-right site, you’d have noticed that it is relatively small scale and confined to California, because California has been late in implementing the Help America Vote Act. You’d also have noticed that it isn’t “connected to one party”, but is rather across the spectrum of parties in California. Once again, you didn’t bother to actually read the source material, and you’re making a fool out of yourself as a result.

Oh, so its -not- a conspiracy theory now, its just a small isolated unimportant incident that I didn’t understand. I see.

        Water is wet, Aaron. Discuss.

Camestros said: “Tell you what Phantom; I’ll do a whole post on voter fraud in the US just for you.”

Don’t go to any trouble on my account. Aaron will accuse you of being a co-conspirator, and Big G will probably burn you for a witch like the WorldCon filk guy. He’s stalking me on Mad Genius today. Hunting for thoughtcrime, I guess.

I see that you didn’t understand what I was saying. I’m not entirely surprised, as you have demonstrated time and again that you are quite dim. Your claim that “whole cemeteries are rising from the grave to vote for Hillary” is a conspiracy theory. Your “evidence” is an alt-right site that blows a local CBS news report out of proportion to make wild-eyed claims of the sort you parroted here. That’s a conspiracy theory.

The reality is that a reporter found 265 cases in which a deceased voter was on the voting rolls in Southern California, with 215 of them in Los Angeles County. Southern California has approximately 22 million residents. Los Angeles County alone has 10 million of them. Los Angeles County purges as many as 2,000 deceased voters from the registration rolls every month. You’re constructing “whole cemeteries” out of a triviality.

        • Aaron,

As you’ll know the context better than I do, was the article saying that these people are known to have actually voted postmortem, or simply that they were left on the rolls? I got the impression that it was the latter, but could be wrong.

      Such as?

What you mean is, you noticed the drop down suggestion box came up empty for “Bill Clinton rape,” and now you’re trying to change the subject.

Incidentally, Assange dropped another 2,000 emails from Podesta today. Leaving aside the content of all this email, don’t any of you people find it alarming that the email was so insecure? She was the Secretary of State, she couldn’t get herself a hardened email server? My doctor has a better server than that.
