I don’t know what kind of chess you think you are playing but that isn’t four dimensional

Sometimes I need a visual metaphor.

A friend once found, at a thrift shop, a game called “SMESS: The Ninnies’ Chess” which was an absurdly simplified version of the ancient strategy game, played on a smaller board (5×5? 6×6?) with a reduced roster of pieces that moved in less challenging ways. I never played it, but it’s too bad it’s not better known, just for the metaphorical opportunities. “Yeah, you’re definitely playing a game of two-dimensional Smess here.”
