Hugo Best Fan Writer: follow up with nomination data

Just a short follow up on yesterday’s post about Best Fan Writer voting.

The table below the fold shows the nomination data. “Sad/Rabid” refers to the slate that the names appeared on rather than the alignment of the writer. Matthew David Surridge withdrew and so Laura J Mixon made it onto the final ballot. Notably one Rabid Puppy nominee (Daniel Enness) did not get enough votes to get on the ballot. Our blog pal Dave Freer was on the Sad slate but not the Rabid slate (proving Vox Day has poor taste even in his picks of Sad Puppies). For people who appeared in the 2014 nomination data I’ve included their number of nominations from 2014.

Anything of note? Well the Sad and Rabid votes do show some variation in numbers. Not everybody vote for all of them. I’d have thought Matthew David Surridge would have picked up some non-Puppy votes and probably so did the other people on the slates. I think Enness’s 66 votes is a goodish estimate of the core Rabid vote.

The total number of nominations was 1542 and the number of ballots was 777 – or roughly two nominations per ballot. If we take Dave Freer’s numbers as an approximate Sad vote and Enness’s as an approximate Rabid vote and assume Sads and rabids made five nominations each then (132 + 66)*5 = 990 Puppy nominations. That leaves 1542 – 990 = 552 nominations from 777 – (132 + 66) = 579. Those two numbers don’t quite balance as it gives us 27 fewer nominations than people. That suggests some wobble in the Puppy votes but not much and that most of the non-Puppy voters voted only for one writer. That tends to indicate a very partisan category – people just nominating the person they want to win rather than a bunch of writers they like.
